There never was a happier nor devoted husband than the male bluebird. He is the gay champion and escort of the female at all times, and while she is sitting, he feeds her regularly. John Burroughs (1837-1921)

{HISTORY}

Here in the Vintage Kitchen, we are always on the lookout for bluebirds. Not only are they the heady stuff of legends when it comes to encouraging joy and happiness but they also symbolize renewal, fresh transitions and new growth.  Some cultures view them as guardian angels and almost all cultures associate them with good fortune. That's just the sort of helper everybody needs in the kitchen!

This antique platter features four chubby bluebirds floating among swags of blooming branches. It was made by the National China Company in Ohio between 1900-1922. National made dishware both for the retail market as well as the hotel trade, and like many china patterns in the early 20th century, these birds were used by several different potteries. In addition to National,  Homer Laughlin, Salem, and WS George all carried their own line of these sweet bluebirds fluttering among the flowers. Who can blame them? That's so in keeping with the joy and good cheer that bluebirds naturally bring.

{CONDITION}

This platter contains no chips or cracks but does contain some fading when it comes to the birds and blooms. Originally, there was a thin blue stripe that ran around the platter near the rim, which has faded almost completely. And as is the case with many beloved antique platters that were part of a century's worth of food festivities, this platter does contain utensil marks, but they can only be seen when held at an angle towards a light source. Please see photos.
