{HISTORY}

Containing a bit of unique history in each piece, this antique mustard serving set is quite a marvel. Highlighting three distinct artists from two different parts of the globe this matching set was made by two different potteries and handpainted by one artist.

The plate was made by Jean Pouyat in Limoges, France in 1906. The mustard jar and serving spoon were made by Rosenthal Porcelain in Bavaria, Germany in 1906. The artist who handpainted and signed both pieces was M.C. Truax. Whether Rosenthal purchased a blank plate from Jean Pouyat or JP purchased a blank jar from  Rosenthal, it is uncertain, but we do know, thanks to signatures on both pieces, that they were painted by one artist - M.C. Truax. It wasn't uncommon for newly formed porcelain companies to purchase blank dishware pieces from other potteries. Rosenthal was the newer pottery of two in this relationship, having first formed in 1887. Jean Pouyat was founded in 1842, so it is quite possible that Rosenthal purchased the plate from JP. Both potteries were known for their exceptional quality and finely detailed work, so it was a complimentary union either way.

While each piece in this set, including the spoon, is made of porcelain - the plate is a little bit heavier in composition than the mustard pot. The elegantly painted pattern skillfully connects both pieces.

Originally, we believe this to be a serving set for mustard, but it could easily also be used as a sugar bowl, honey jar or jam jar. Either way, the plate encourages a petite companion in the form of tea sandwiches, biscuits, cakes, or cookies. Rare, utterly unique, and exquisitely delicate this set is a beauty to behold.
