The origin of sugar is lost in the mists of time: India was probably the cradle of its manufacture; since the most faraway times sugar cane has been known there in a wild state... (from Larousse Gastronomique)

{HISTORY}

If you ever get a chance to read about the history of suagr it is pretty fascinating stuff. Once upon a time sugar, was only sold in apothecaries, as it was thought to be very beneficial for a number of different health ailments. Now it is in a precarious position somewhere between being a forbidden food and a inchpin ingrediant taht can turn a meal from good into great

Squat, bulbous and full of personality it is hard not to see the appeal in vintage and antique sugar bowls. Cute and curious with their lidded tops and two handled shape, they offer a variety of uses beyond their original intention. Here in the Vintage Kitchen, we like to use them as storage containers, planters and refrigerator jars for homemade spa treatments. They also make great vessels for entertaining - like holding silverware or dips or little nibbles like cheese straws or bread sticks during cocktail hour. Basically they are helpful in a bunch of different ways!

This antique Noritake Nippon sugar jar is from the 1920's. It was made in Japan by the Morimura Brothers who founded one of the finest dishware companies in the world. In  keeping with Noritake's reputation for exquisite artistry, and award-winning craftsmanship, this sugar bowl is a true beauty. Handpainted with delicate roses and striped bands, its simple style and neutral color palette allow it to easily blend in with your existing collection or outside of the box intentions.
