{HISTORY}

Published by the Chattanooga Medicine Company in Chattanooga, TN in 1923, this almost antique salad book was created as part of promotional advertising for medicinal tonics that aided in digestion and pain relief.

Founded by Zeboim Cartter Patten in 1879, the Chattanooga Medicine Company manufactured two popular medicines in the 19th and 20th centuries - Wine of Cardui and Black-Draught. A talented businessman and enthusiastic marketer, Zeboim, knew the power of advertising to the right people at the right time. In addition to creating yearly calendars and date keepers, the CMC also came up with unique promotional materials like this salad recipe booklet, geared towards mothers, wives, and home cooks. For the CMC knew that these were the ladies responsible for caring for all aspects of health and nutrition for their entire family. It was a natural fit to pair interesting recipes with product advertising and promotion.

Like the quote above from the introduction, this is not a lettuce-based salad booklet nor a jello mold (often times referred to as salad) booklet. The 22 recipes here contain an interesting assortment of chopped vegetables, fruit, nuts, and proteins. Many are mayonaise-based, a traditional staple in any Southern cook's kitchen.  There are even a two homemade mayonnaise recipes included as well as a homemade mustard recipe.

Submitted by home cooks throughout the South, these recipes document regional cuisine as well as food trends during the early 20th century. Interesting and diverse in content, especially combined with the medicinal advertisements and testimonials, this booklet is a true slice of 1920s life. Here in the Vintage Kitchen, we especially love the cover art.
