Sunset's Barbecue Book - 1941 Edition Third Printing with Recipes and Grill Building Plans
The flicker and warmth of an open-air fire awaken in us impulses that hark back to pioneer days and "put us right with the world... (from the Foreword)
{HISTORY}
Not every cookbook comes with recipes and construction plans on how to build the equipment in which to cook the recipes on, but when it comes to Sunset's Barbecue Book, readers, cooks and outdoor grill enthusiasts are in luck with both.
First published in December 1938 by Sunset magazine, this barbecue book is a combination DIY building project and an instructional how-to cookbook. Covering style, accessories, fire-friendly materials, and aesthetic, the first half of this faux-bois covered book is devoted to everything you need to design, build and stylize your grilling area. Complete with 14 different construction plans, this section details all types of outdoor grill builds from simple stone firepits to extravagant brick oven fireplace kitchens complete with cupboards and sinks and work surfaces. Architectural drawings of each plan highlight the materials and measurements.
The second half of the book is dedicated to barbecue-friendly foods including on main meat/fish/poultry dishes, sauces and side dishes. Interesting recipes include Pit-Roasted Beef, Mexican Beans, Circle J Barbecue Sauce, Bonfire Big Apples, Passoli, Macaroni and Cheese, Mulled Wine, Corn Chowder, Pit Barbecue Sauce, and Grilled Pancakes.
Edited by Virginia Rich,an 20th century culinary novelist and Sunset Magazine's food editor, and George Sanderson who compiled the grill construction plans from numerous sources, including the National Park Service and the Forest Service, this book is a fantastic nod to 1930s design. It's also a fun look at outdoor kitchens and how they haven't really changed much over the past 90 years, proving the grill's timeless charm and functional ability.
