{HISTORY}

And so it begins! A whole dedicated book on to the cooking experiences of the newly married woman. The very wonderful thing about Betty Wason was that she was a career woman with an adventurous and independent spirit that was very modern for her 20th-century life. This is the second Betty Wason cookbook to come through the shop (the first was her Greek Cookbook) and we wish we had a library full to offer. As a world traveler and a journalist since the time she finished school, Betty knows her way around the kitchen with delicious recipes and interesting stories. Having spent much time in Europe, she learned a lot about cooking with wine and herbs to create simple dishes with an abundance of flavor.

In this book, Betty set out to write a practical guide for brides just learning their way around a kitchen not only built for two but intended just for two. As a modern thinker, she rejects the viewpoint that all women in the 1960's got married, quit their jobs and relegated themselves to a big house and the notion that they had to wait on their husband's hand foot, catering to their every gastronomic need. Instead, Betty tells the real story here - about how 1960's women were working on their careers as much as their love lives, and how once they married, they did not quite their jobs and their husbands lauded and encouraged their efforts to be dedicated to both family and career. With that attitude in mind, Betty catered this book towards the workers of the midcentury-world who lived in small apartments built for two and had limited time and space to accommodate a large bridal registry of gifts nor the time to cook large, lengthy meals every day of the week. What results here in Bride in the Kitchen is a fun book full of GREAT recipes and interesting ideas about how husband and wife can learn their way around the kitchen together.

Betty faced gender discrimination in her job as a war correspondent for CBS News so she knew first hand how demeaning it was to trivialize women's lives, and she knew how women had dreams and desires that extended far beyond hearth and home. So it is really refreshing to read this book and experience Betty's modern attitudes toward cooking and marriage mid-century style. It's a fresh perspective and wonderfully executed here! If there was ever an advocate for you in the kitchen - it would be Betty, the vintage fairy godmother of real modern day women everywhere.

{CONDITION}

Because Betty's cookbooks are so great, they usually bear some signs of adventure in the kitchen due to frequent use. This book overall is in great shape. The interior pages are clean and bright, the spine and all pages are intact. There are three small puncture holes in the spine, there are some light cooking smudges on the bottom section of the paper edge spine, there are some light scuffs marks on the back cover board and towards the middle of the book the binding has cracked slightly so that some of the favric cloth covering peeks through. Please see photos.
