I always make a distinction between nostalgia and sentimentality. Nostalgia is genuine - you mourn things that actually happened. Pete Hamill

{HISTORY}

Here they are! Meet Red and Alice, a pair of 1950's portrait plates. Just about the cutest couple the retro kitchen has ever seen, portrait plates were popular decorating pieces in the 1940's and 1950's. Made out of a variety of styles, some including hand-painting and even felt fabric details,  they were meant to be hung on the wall - a little nod to the his and her home. Sometimes they even included portrait plates for kids so that the whole family could be represented.

In the case of Alice and Red, we don't know who their manufacturer was, but we do know that they were a Christmas gift in 1953 from three friends or three family members, thanks to a gift inscription on the back of each plate.

Whimsical and cheerful in all their retro charm, vintage plates like Red and Alice are now hard to find pieces of nostalgia that represent both a bit of midcentury pop culture and also family history. It is fun to create little stories about Red with his curly mustache and jaunty clothing and about Alice with her long pretty eyelashes and bright red lips. Who was this couple exactly? And where did they live? And what did their kitchen look like? Such conversation pieces and such story starters these two are now! If you are looking to add a little whimsical personality to your space - start with these two. They promise to inspire all the creativity your kitchen can muster.
